Collaboration with people affected by homelessness and mental illness

Hopeful World: Mel Young, Homeless World Cup

Hi Mel, what is the Homeless World Cup all about?

The Homeless World Cup is a unique, pioneering social movement which uses football to inspire homeless people to change their own lives.

When a homeless person gets involved in football, they build relationships; they become teammates who learn to trust and share. They have a responsibility to attend training sessions and games, to be on time, and to be prepared to participate. They feel that they are part of something larger than themselves.

The Homeless World Cup Foundation operates through a network of National Partners to support football programmes and social enterprise development. We provide a focus for—and celebration of—their year-round activity by holding an annual, world-class, international football tournament for national teams of homeless men and women.

Whereabouts are you based and who are you working with?

The Homeless World Cup Foundation is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. But our partners are all around the world! They use football as a way to engage with homeless and socially disadvantaged men, women, and children in 73 countries – and we’re always looking to grow to more places.

The 2016 tournament will welcome more than 500 players from those partner programmes to Glasgow on July 10-16.

What are you most proud of?

For me, it’s how many homeless people have used the Homeless World Cup to change their lives all across the globe. That’s what I’m most proud of.
