All Hopeful Traders apparel uses organic or recycled materials with many of our products being made from 100% organic cotton. This sounds very nice but what actual difference does it make?
1. IT'S GOOD FOR GROWERS
Organic cotton uses no toxic pesticides, which are harmful to farmers and their communities. Pesticides are not just harmful to those coming into direct contact but they often find their way into surrounding water supplies.
2. IT USES LESS WATER
1kg of organic cotton requires 7,000 litres of water whereas conventional cotton requires 20,000. That means one organic sweatshirt (around 500g) requires around 6,500 litres less water to produce.
3. IT DOESN'T POLLUTE THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
The intensive use of pesticides on conventional cotton inevitably leads to damage to surrounding ecosystems as the pesticides seep into the earth and local waterways.
4. YOU GET BETTER QUALITY CLOTHES
All organic cotton is handpicked whereas conventional cotton is mostly machine harvested. Machine harvesting damages fibres in the cotton and allows impurities to enter the production process. Handpicking ensures preservation of the fibres in the cotton and better purity meaning your clothes feel nicer and last longer.
5. IT'S KINDER TO YOUR SKIN
Chemicals used on conventional cotton can linger in the fabric causing skin irritation and allergic reactions.
